What is Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal, or explant surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that removes silicone or saline breast implants. During implant removal surgery, our surgeons can replace implants with new ones or your own body fat. In some cases, they may reshape the breasts and allow them to heal without implant replacement. Breast lifts are often combined with breast implant removal procedures or replacement surgery to restore a more youthful shape and position of your breasts.

At the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, our board-certified plastic surgeons use their expertise and innovative techniques to create natural-looking breasts. We handle breast implant removal surgery with the utmost care, attention to detail, and respect. We have helped thousands of patients reach their cosmetic goals and are ready to help you improve the appearance of your breasts, too!

With our knowledge and decades of experience in the aesthetic field, we can correct a breast augmentation that didn’t turn out as beautifully as you hoped, remove or replace a ruptured implant, and restore your breast shape. We can also help if you are concerned about breast implant illness.

Additionally, if you are worried about breast implant removal expenses, we offer several financing options to help make your surgery affordable.

Implant removal can correct several issues after a breast augmentation. The following are common reasons that patients seek out our team of expert surgeons for explant surgery:

Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue tightens around the implant. This can cause pain, discomfort, and tightness in the chest. It can also make the implants look and feel deformed. These breast issues are commonly treated with an en-bloc capsulectomy. Our board-certified specialists are experts in performing en-bloc capsulectomy.

A rupture occurs when the breast implant’s outer shell rips or tears, which may cause the inner contents to leak. Breast implant rupture can be caused by normal aging of the implant, trauma to the breast, a needle insertion during a biopsy, or other factors. When saline or silicone gel-filled implants rupture, the implants should be surgically removed or replaced.

Scar tissue, implant rippling, and weakened breast skin can cause visible deformities. Rippling occurs when the implant develops wrinkles and folds, which may be visible through the skin. These breast anomalies can affect the size, shape, and contours of your breasts. Our surgeons can address these concerns by removing or replacing the implants.

Breast implant illnesses (BII) are adverse physical and mental symptoms that a very small percentage of patients may experience after breast augmentation with implants. Although BII is a relatively new breast-related issue, initial research indicates breast implant removal often corrects BII symptoms.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Implant Removal?

As women, we should have complete control over our bodies. This means that, although you may have gotten breast implants in the past, if the augmented breasts no longer serve you, it is best to get them removed.

At the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, we offer breast implant removal in Newport Beach for women who want to change the size of their breasts. But there may be many questions in your mind about what the benefits of a breast implant removal procedure are. Here are some of the most common benefits of the procedure:

  • It improves your overall health: When you undergo breast implant removal, you enhance your overall physical health. Breast augmentation surgery can definitely enhance the look of your breast. However, over time, there is an increased chance of infection, pain, and breast tissue hardening or capsular contracture. Capsular contracture leads to pain, discomfort, and, in some worse cases, breast deformation. Hence, with breast implant removal, you can alleviate these symptoms and improve your overall health.
  • It provides natural-looking results: As you age, your likes and dislikes change. So, although you may have gotten implants purely for the aesthetics, you may want to change your decision. If you want to embrace your natural self, getting your breast implants removed is a great choice. This decision will help you attain the natural shape and size of your breasts.
  • Helps alleviate the symptoms of breast implant illness: Breast implant illness complications are a series of symptoms that women report after undergoing the initial breast augmentation procedure. This includes fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, cardiac symptoms, and more. Fortunately, there is a solution to these problems, and that is getting the breast implants removed.

Women decide to get their implants removed for several reasons. However, your decision must solely be based on your likes and dislikes and personal preferences. This is why it is extremely important to think about your decision before taking any action. If you have any doubts about the procedure, please contact one of our experts to ensure you are going in the right direction.

Common Reasons for Breast Implant Removal

Getting a breast implant must be a well-thought-out decision. There are numerous reasons why an individual opts for breast explant surgery. These are a few of them:

  • Personal preference: Determining the size and look of your breasts is a personal decision. Hence, many people get their implants removed due to personal reasons. The shape of your breast may change due to childbirth, hormonal fluctuations, or age. This may make you want to get the implants removed to achieve the aesthetic that you desire.
  • Change in the mindset: When we are young and in our 20s, we tend to have a lot of insecurities about the way we look. This leads to many young women getting implants. However, as they grow older, they start embracing themselves. This means that they want to let go of things that are not natural. Hence, many women who get implants out of insecurity at a young age decide to get them removed later on in life.
  • Medical reasons: If you didn’t get your breast implantation procedure done by a board-certified plastic surgeon, you are most probably not satisfied with the outcome. Getting implants from someone inexperienced will lead to unnatural-looking results. Moreover, getting the procedure done at a non-reputable clinic leads to people getting infections. In the worst cases, there are also instances where the silicone implant ruptures, damaging the breast tissue. On top of that, many women also experience neck and back pain after getting the implants because of a sudden increase in weight. These reasons make removing the implants an absolute necessity.

Remember that nothing comes above your mental and physical well-being. So, if you think that breast explant surgery will improve your physical and mental health, you should opt for it. However, you should evaluate the clinic’s reputation before you schedule the procedure.

Learn More About Breast Implant Removal

At Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, we tailor breast implant removal surgery to your specific concerns. Depending on your needs and condition, the following options may be available:

Total Capsulectomy

During a total capsulectomy, doctors remove the entire breast capsule scar tissue around the breast implant. The procedure includes removing the front and back wall of the implant capsule and the implant itself.

Partial Capsulectomy

During a partial capsulectomy, surgeons only remove some scar tissue. This procedure can soften the implants to improve the overall appearance of your breasts.

En Bloc Capsulectomy

During an en bloc (“all together”) capsulectomy, plastic surgeons remove the entire capsule of scar tissue and the implant in one piece. This procedure is commonly performed for patients with breast implant illness (BII) symptoms.

Our surgeons can also use this technique to help patients with Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) symptoms. BIA-ALCL is a rare implant-related cancer that can cause pain, swelling, lumps in and around the breast, and fluid buildup. Symptoms typically begin to appear between three and fourteen years after implant placement.

BIA-ALCL is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition. If you suspect you may have symptoms of BIA-ALCL, we urge you to schedule a consultation with one of the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery surgeons as soon as possible to ensure you receive the best care quickly.

After your surgery in our Newport Beach facility, you will usually need time to heal and recover. During this time, your breasts will likely be swollen and tender. Depending on your surgery, your surgeon may insert drains to allow proper healing and prevent infection. You may also need to wear a compression bra to reduce swelling

While the exact recovery timeline is different for each person, many patients feel like they are “back to normal” around six to eight weeks after surgery. Combining breast implant removal with additional procedures like fat transfer or a breast lift may increase your recovery time.

During your consultation, your Pacific Center surgeon will help set recovery expectations based on your specific case. Before surgery, your surgeon will provide detailed instructions about any recovery restrictions. They will also share the best practices to ensure a healthy recovery and optimal results.

Your complete results will depend on the condition of your breasts and the goals of your procedure. It may take up to a year for some patients to see the final results as swelling decreases and the breasts settle with time.

If you opt for new implants, you can expect them to last ten years or more. However, we recommend you replace your implants eight to ten years after surgery to prevent rupture or other cosmetic concerns.

Patients may choose this surgery for cosmetic or medical reasons. Ideal candidates for breast implant removal surgery may have the following concerns:

  • Your breast implants are causing pain or discomfort.
  • Your breast implants feel too heavy or get in the way of normal activities.
  • You can feel your breast scar tissue getting harder or tighter.
  • Your breast implants don’t look or feel right, and you want an aesthetic change.

Ideal candidates are also physically healthy and maintain a stable weight. Depending on your reason for removing the breast implants, there are situations where you may not be a good candidate for breast implant removal. After breast augmentation, you will usually have to wait until your breasts have fully healed before we can accurately assess your condition. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for breast implant removal is by scheduling a consultation with our board-certified surgeons. They will examine your health situation and need to make sure you are a candidate for breast implant removal.

Since breast implant removal can involve multiple procedure options, the cost can vary greatly from person to person. It will also be influenced by factors such as your geographic location and your provider’s experience. The national average cost of breast implant removal is $3,049, but this doesn’t include all associated expenses, such as facility fees and the cost of anesthesia. This is only a rough estimate; your total expense will depend on your unique procedure and its complexity. If you are having your implants replaced, you will also need to consider the price of the new implants. We encourage you to consult with one of our board-certified surgeons, who will help you develop a treatment plan and give you an accurate price estimate.

The appearance of your breast will definitely be different after you get the implants removed. Of course, the results will vary based on different factors, including the type of implant, the size of the implant, the placement, and your body type. One obvious thing is that your breasts will look and feel natural. Also, you may have some temporary scarring right after the procedure. But don’t worry because this usually goes away in a few months.

Yes, it is possible to get a breast lift at the same time as a breast implant. Actually, this is a very common procedure. Many women choose to have both procedures done simultaneously to enhance breast volume while also addressing sagging or drooping, especially after weight loss, pregnancy, or aging.

The results of breast implant removal surgery are visible right after the procedure is complete. However, the final appearance can take some time because the muscles still need to settle completely. Overall, you will be able to see the final results in a few weeks.

Breast implant removal is generally considered safe. But like all good things, there may be some side effects, such as you may have sagging and drooping breasts after the removal. However, you can easily tackle this problem with a breast lift. This gives your breasts the much-needed rise, helping you attain a natural look.
