Not all “man boobs” are created equal. Different kinds of gynecomastia require different surgical procedures for correction. Male breast reduction can be performed with different methods depending on which type you have. Here are the 8 kinds of gynecomastia. Which profile do you match?
Normal
Normal gynecomastia is caused by a drop in testosterone levels usually seen in young boys from 12 to 15 years old and in men older than 65. Typically no surgical intervention is needed. It will go away on its own within one to two years as natural hormone cycles change. If it has not regressed by this time, consult a plastic surgeon.
Pure Glandular
Caused by steroid use, this type of gynecomastia is seen most commonly in patients like body builders. In order to treat pure glandular gynecomastia, excision (removal) of the breast gland is required.
Adult
In this common type of gynecomastia, there is fat within the breast gland. Either liposuction, excision or a combination surgery may be required to treat this condition.
Adolescent
This hereditary gynecomastia will affect between 1/3 and 2/3 of young boys between the ages of 9 and 14. As mentioned under “Normal Gynecomastia,” many cases will resolve on their own without any intervention. If surgery is necessary, most patients choose to wait until they are 18.

Asymmetric
As the name implies, gynecomastia appears to affect one breast more than the other. Surgery will most likely be necessary to even out the chest.
Pseudo
Unlike “Pure Glandular Gynecomastia,” this gynecomastia is composed purely of fat tissue as opposed to glandular tissue. Diet alone may be able to treat this gynecomastia. Liposuction or more invasive surgeries are also options.
Puffy Nipples
One of the most common forms of gynecomastia, Puffy Nipple Areola Complex is caused by either gland or adipose tissue located under the areola causing it to appear dome shaped. The surgery to correct puffy nipples takes only about two hours and patient recover in under a week.
Severe
Older men or those who lose a great deal of weight often experience a loss of skin elasticity leading to saggy skin and enlarged breasts. Surgery is the best option for this condition.
