MiraDry Your Underarm Sweat & Odor – Dr. Horowitz Explains

What is Sweat Reduction?

Sweat reduction treatments are designed to reduce excessive sweating, also called hyperhidrosis. When your body temperature rises, your nervous system activates your sweat glands to help your body cool down. However, in patients with hyperhidrosis, the nerves that signal their sweat glands become overactive.

There is more than one treatment option for sweat reduction. During your consultation at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, we’ll discuss your concerns and what treatments are available. Our experienced team members can recommend which treatment option may work best, depending on your needs and goals.

At BioSpa, we offer the following sweat-reduction treatments:

MiraDry® is a non-invasive FDA-cleared treatment that significantly reduces excessive underarm sweat (axillary hyperhidrosis) and odor permanently. This innovative sweat reduction method utilizes a handheld device to precisely deliver electromagnetic energy to the treatment area. With miraDry®, we are able to heat the sweat and odor glands in your underarms to destroy the glands without harming your skin.

To address uncontrollable sweating, our master injector can use Botox® and Dysport®, which are neuromodulators made of Botulinum toxin. These Botulinum toxin injectables can block the nerves that trigger your sweat glands and offer an effective temporary solution to sweat reduction. We often recommend this option for patients with sweaty palms or for those who are not a suitable candidate for miraDry®. If you are looking for a longer-lasting solution for excessive underarm sweat and odor, miraDry® may be the best treatment for you.

Types of Hyperhidrosis

There is more than one treatment option for sweat reduction. During your consultation at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery, we’ll discuss your concerns and what treatments are available. Our experienced team members can recommend which treatment option may work best, depending on your needs and goals.

Primary Hyperhidrosis

Primary hyperhidrosis refers to excessive sweating that is not caused by another medical condition. This type of sweating occurs in particular areas of the body and is usually relatively “symmetric.” In other words, the left and right sides of the body are affected similarly by this condition. The most common focal areas are sweaty underarms, sweaty feet, sweaty hands, and sweaty face or head. While sweat gland removal is a treatment option, you can also go for non-invasive methods to treat this condition.

Secondary Hyperhidrosis

Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by another medical condition or is a side effect of a medication. People with this condition experience sweating in larger or other areas of the body. These people may often experience sweating symptoms while sleeping. With secondary hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating usually starts in adulthood, whereas primary focal hyperhidrosis starts in childhood or adolescence.

Benefits of Sweat Reduction Treatment

If you get sweat reduction treatments from a trusted healthcare professional, you can enjoy several benefits:

Reduced Sweating: With the right treatment plan, you can reduce excessive underarm sweating. As a result, you can feel more comfortable and confident.

Reduced Body Odor: As you are able to reduce the amount of sweating, you can get rid of the pungent body odor.

No More Sweat Stains: Our treatments can help you minimize sweating, preventing sweat stains on clothing. So you can wear your favorite shirts without worrying about stains that used to happen when your clothes absorbed sweat.

Minimal Downtime: Most of the hyperhidrosis treatment options are non-invasive. This is why they have minimal recovery time. You can return to your normal routine soon after the treatment.

Long-Lasting Results: Some of the hyperhidrosis treatments can provide long-lasting relief from excessive sweating, improving your quality of life. Consult your healthcare provider to know which treatment is right for you.

Learn More About Sweat Reduction

To ensure your comfort, your provider at BioSpa may apply a local anesthetic to your treatment areas before injecting a neuromodulator or performing a miraDry® treatment.

To prepare for your miraDry® session, you should shave under your arms and avoid using deodorants or antiperspirants the day of your treatment. We recommend you wear a comfortable shirt that is not tight-fitting to prevent skin irritation in the underarm region.

Botox® and Dysport® are convenient “lunch break” injection treatments that usually only take about 15 minutes, depending on the number of injections and treatment areas. A miraDry® session should take about an hour.

Because these sweat reduction treatments are usually quick, easy and don’t require any incisions, you won’t need significant downtime. You may resume most of your normal activities right after your sweat reduction session. However, you should avoid vigorous exercise, saunas, and jacuzzis for several days after your treatment.

After your miraDry® session, you may experience some numbness, soreness, and swelling in the areas that received treatment. To reduce swelling, you may ice your treated areas and take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers over the next few days.

You should also keep your treated areas clean and apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. For the next few days after treatment, avoid shaving and applying deodorants or antiperspirants. If you still want to use these products once you have recovered from your miraDry® treatment, you should discard any opened or used products and use new ones instead.

Typically, there is no downtime required with Botox® and Dysport® treatments. However, you may experience slight swelling, bruising, or other minor side effects at the injection site. Your BioSpa provider will inform you of the possible side effects that you should look out for.

You can expect immediate results following your miraDry® session. You may feel more confident and comfortable in your clothes, as you won’t have to worry about sweat stains or odor anymore. Generally, miraDry® patients experience up to 82% sweat reduction after one to two miraDry® sessions.

A bonus benefit of miraDry® is hair reduction. Just as the thermal heat destroys unwanted sweat and odor glands, it can also permanently destroy underarm hair follicles. It’s so effective that sometimes patients seek out the treatment primarily for this benefit. In those cases, you may hear it referred to as “miraSmooth.”

After Botox® and Dysport® treatments, it can take between two to seven days to notice a reduction in sweat. After this time, you can enjoy a significant improvement in the treated area.

While miraDry® results are permanent, the results from Botox® and Dysport® treatments often last between three to six months.

If deodorants and antiperspirants are not working for you, you may be a good candidate for injectables or miraDry® treatments at our Newport Beach MedSpa. Patients who want to alleviate sweat and body odor with injections or miraDry® should be healthy and at least 18 years of age.

To determine if you are a good candidate for Botox®, Dysport®, or miraDry® treatments, schedule an appointment with our BioSpa team. We will listen to your concerns and goals to recommend the best treatment for you.

Since there are multiple sweat reduction treatment options, the cost will depend on which you choose and the treatment area. The national average cost of Botox® and Dysport® injections for both underarms is $1,000, while the average cost of miraDry® is $2,250.

However, this is only a rough estimate, and the actual cost will vary depending on factors such as your geographic location and your provider’s experience. We encourage you to consult with our BioSpa team in Newport Beach to develop your individualized treatment plan and gather a more accurate treatment quote.

Patients who undergo invasive hyperhidrosis treatment may feel pain at the incision sites and the nerves near the incisions. You may also experience some chest discomfort for the first 1-3 days after surgery. The good news is that most patients undergoing sweat reduction treatment can return to normal activity after about a week. Your body continues to heal after any surgical procedure for weeks or months. During this time, you may experience compensatory sweating in specific areas of the body. However, if you choose non-invasive treatment options, the downtime is minimal.

Sweat reduction treatments are generally safe for all skin types. However, it is crucial that you consider your skin type and the potential side effects of any treatment. If you are concerned about your sweat production, you can consult a dermatologist. The expert will be able to tell you what type of treatment will be good for your skin type. They can also create a plan for your sweat reduction treatment based on your condition and requirements.
