Some of the breast reconstruction techniques that your surgeon may use include one or a combination of the following:

Flap Reconstruction 

Flap reconstruction involves extracting tissue from another area of your body (like your abdomen) to build a new breast mound. This is similar to fat grafting but more complex since the transfer includes skin, muscle, and blood vessels, not just fat. There are multiple techniques and types of flaps that your surgeon at the Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery may offer to restore your breast contours.

Autologous Fat Grafting

Fat grafting is one of the least invasive breast reconstruction and augmentation procedures. During a fat grafting procedure, your surgeon will use liposuction techniques to harvest fat from other parts of your body and carefully inject it into your breast(s). This procedure will help augment and improve any breast deformities, providing natural-looking breast contours. Common donor sites for the fat graft are the thighs, love handles, or abdomen.

Breast Implants

Breast implants are among the most common breast reconstruction and breast augmentation options. During a breast reconstruction with implants, your surgeon inserts implants tailored to your desired size, shape, and material. Popular breast implants are made of silicone or saline, and they last for many years.

Nipple / Areola Reconstruction

A nipple reconstruction involves rebuilding your nipple and areola. Various techniques can recreate your nipple-areola areas, including 3D tattooing a few months after breast reconstruction procedure. At our surgical facility, our experienced plastic surgeons also offer nipple correction procedures to help reshape, resize, and restore your nipples.

The duration of your entire procedure will depend on the type and the amount of breast reconstruction techniques that are utilized. We will administer local or general anesthesia for your comfort, depending on how invasive your procedure is. Most breast reconstructions are performed under general anesthesia.

After your breast reconstruction surgery, your breast(s) will be covered with a surgical compression garment to help with healing, promote circulation, and reduce swelling. Your provider will also place a temporary tube under your skin to drain excess fluid. It may take six to eight weeks to make a full recovery, depending on the type of procedure(s) you have done. You will likely need to avoid strenuous and heavy lifting activities during this time.

Closely follow your surgeon’s post-surgery recommendations and instructions to ensure a fast and healthy recovery. Additionally, ideal candidates for breast reconstruction surgery are patients free from wound healing issues with positive, realistic expectations for the surgery outcome. Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding are not good candidates for this procedure.
